Learn How You Can Knit Baby Blankets
By Silviu Ciubotaru

In the current economical climate, buying stuff is not that easy for everybody. Especially for mothers with a new born baby. Special baby food, cleaning products, bedding accessories, baby bed, baby carriage and the list can go on, are all must-have baby stuff that cost lots and lots of money. But you can save some dollars on other baby items that you can make by yourself. Those would be baby blankets. This article will show you a very easy way on how you can knit your very own baby blanket with a small cost and a very small amount of effort. Also, you can choose the colors, printings and fabrics that you wish, so I think that's another important aspect when you take into consideration making the blankets yourself. Oh, and did I mention that handmade baby blankets make a wonderful gift?

I guess I convinced you to give baby blankets knitting a try, so here are the things that I used when I started with this project and what I think that you need to get you on the way.

First of all, choose the fabric of the soon-to-be baby blanket. I got from the store 12 oz. medium weight acrylic yarn. The colors are up to you. I went for light blue for the first one that I made, the one that I most proud of.
Knitting needles in two sizes: 10 and 11. Of course, you may not enjoy knitting with one of these two sizes. Therefor, I suggest giving them a try at first and see which one suites you better. The difference between the two sizes won't affect the quality of the final product (if you are good at handling a knitting needle, of course).
I also used knitting stitch markers, but I will show you how they came in hand a little bit later.
Now that we have everything ready, let's get started. First, you have to cast about 120 stitches and also knit the border of the blanket with 10 rows.

For the next step, we have a pattern that you will have to use. Pay extra attention to this step, read it several times before starting and make sure everything is clear. This method applies for the next 1 to 10 rows. On row number one knit on the seventh row, then using the maker that we talked about earlier, point the side border. Another marker has to be placed after you purl until the last seven stitches. Knit seven again. For row number two, simply knit. On row number three, you hate to knit, purl, place a marker spot and knit again. Row four, just knit and row five is identical to row three. Now the job gets simple: from rows six to ten, simply knit.

You should repeat this process for about 14-15 times, but remember always to end it with row five! For the final part, you have to do like in the beginning: 120 stitches and knit the border of the blanket with 10 rows.
